The 61st Vyasa Puja Mahotsava of HH Jayapataka Swami Maharaja

The auspicious celebrations of HH Jayapataka Swami’s Vyasa Puja has always been a twofold celebration for disciples all over the world. Owing to the fact that HH appearance on the glorious Kamada Ekadasi tithi, it naturally demands itself a grain feast to be held on the following day. Double the celebrations, double the feasting.

Sri Jagannatha Mandir, ISKCON Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, held a grand Vyasa Puja celebration on 26th March 2010, Friday, as HH Jayapataka Swami is the Co-GBC for Malaysia, along with HH Prabhavisnu Swami Maharaja and thus has hundreds of disciples in the region.

Although a working day, many devotees took leave; some faked illness to get leave; while others took a “quick” step out of office to attend the celebrations. Vyasa Puja Celebrations began after the daily Srila Prabhupada Guru Puja, where a recorded video of Gurumaharaj’s Vyasa Puja lecture from 2 years ago was shown. This year, 524 Gaurabda marks the 500th sanyassa anniversary of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and coincidently is the 40th sanyassa anniversary of HH Jayapataka Swami as well.

An abhiseka of Lord Narasimhadev, led by HG Ashraya Govind Prabhu and HG Gopal Prabhu, was performed for the well being and speedy recovery of our Gurudev. Sweet melodious kirtan was performed throughout as gathered devotees mentally pray for the well being of one of ISKCON’s most stalwart preachers. Next were the homage offerings by senior disciples beginning with ISKCON Malaysia Vice-President, HG Vrindavana Chandra Prabhu and HG Simheswara Prabhu, General Secretary of ISKCON Malaysia.

Looking on at the vyasanasa setup for Gurudev right beside Srila Prabhupada’s, one can’t help but feel meek and touched by the compassion of Srila Prabhupada shown through HH Jayapataka Swami in reclaiming the fallen souls of this world, dedicating his life to the mission of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Indeed, vyasa puja is an important day for disciples to strengthen their faith and repay their unlimited debt to the guru parampara. How merciful is the Guru to accept the responsibility of delivering a fallen soul, even at the expense of rebirth again into this material world. One can only wonder how one has come to such good fortune of being a disciple. This is what is termed as causeless mercy. By mercy of Guru, one get’s Krishna, yasya prasadad bhagavat-prasadah.

Bhoga offering was done simultaneously for Guru and Krishna. A media presentation was prepared by HG Mulakarana Prabhu, showcasing Gurumaharaj’s recent visit to our temple and photo pastimes of HH with various local devotees. The Guru-astaka prayers were then sung by our temple president HG Visnu Caitanya Prabhu and an arthi was then done for Srila Prabhupada and Gurumaharaj simultaneously. Pushpanjali marked the end of the Vyasa Puja offering, where the only thing left was to honor the wonderfully prepared ekadasi prasadam. So many disciples and devotees gathered to help with cooking, organizing, serving, decoration and much more on this auspicious day. It is not possible to name all, but their wonderful service attitude and surrender is known undoubtedly to Guru and Krishna. The day was just like a Sunday Feast, bustling with devotees, feasting, singing and dancing. The worries of getting back to office or other mundane daily affairs seem a distant memory.

On the 28th of March, Sunday, the grain feast was held where once more arthi, pushpanjali and grain bhoga offering was done. A slide show presentation by a senior disciple of Gurumaharaj, HG Tusti Mohan Krsna Prabhu was presented, showcasing so many lila’s of Gurudev in Sri Dham Mayapur. An amazing array of grain prasada was served to the assembled devotees and well wishers; indeed it was not something to be missed.

The 61st Vyasa Puja celebrations for His Holiness Jayapataka Swami was a wonderful effort of all devotees of Sri Jagannatha Mandir Kuala Lumpur, regardless of their diksha gurus. With humble hopes that their Lordships Sri Sri Jagannatha, Baladeva and Subadra Mayi, Sri Sri Nitai Gaurasundar and Sri Sri Radha Shyamasundar will kindly bless and bestow their mercy upon our beloved Gurudev that he will regain his ability to walk without aid very soon.

Prabhu, this article is well captioned and contents well said. Indeed without Guru, there is no way a person can be led to Lord Krishna and alvation to the spiritual world. A devotee is reminded about the verse from Bhagavat Gita, “Tad vidhi pranipartana, Pariprasnanaa sevaya, Upadeksanthi tek jnanam, Jnaninas dhava drasinahar. Simply translated it means, “Just try to approach a spiritual master and enquire submissively to him. Such a great soul who has seen the truth can impart knowledge about the Absolute Being and His paraphenalia.”

The ceremony proper was filled with a sense of deferential esteem towards the guru, praising his sacred activities and remembering his incredible teachings by example. Gurumaharaj has one of the largest congregation of initiated deciples, if not the largest in the entire free world to compliment his comprehensive stature.

    Hare Krishna.

    Uday Nitai Chandra Dasa.
