VOICE KUALA LUMPUR 1st ANNUAL JULY BOOK MARATHON REPORT
The VOICE Kuala Lumpur team, guided by HG Srivas Caitanya Prabhu, decided to get organized and launch a special book distribution marathon month dedicated to the students in various universities and colleges around the KL and Klang Valley region. The team focused on distribution only two books, as a set, the Bhagavad-gita As-It-Is and Discover Your Self, a six-chapter fundamental understanding based on the philosophy of the Bhagavad-gita for a merger price of RM10.00. Definitely with such a price for a set of two books, success is certain.
An official launching for the book distribution month was held on the 28th June 2009 at Sri Jagannatha Mandir ISKCON Kuala Lumpur. The launch was aimed at getting donations for subsidizing the cost of the books, so that such a modest price can be achieved. A total of 100 students were sponsored by the devotees during this launch.
The team then set off to local universities and colleges, taking every single opportunity to distribute these books. Generally, it was a room by room distribution basis in student’s hostels. The team also utilized devotee contacts, who are positioned in local varsities, to help distribute this sets to students. Also, we managed to secure a booth during University Malaya’s ‘Malam Pengenalan’ (Freshie’s Night) where around 37 sets were sold. We were also able to set up another booth during University Tenaga Nasional’s Indian Cultural Societies Vedic Talk Series.
Nightly book distribution at University Tenaga Nasional yields an average sale of 10 books per day for distribution duration of 1.5 hours. Multimedia University, University Putra Malaysia and Masterskills are among other varsities where the students visited.
Total sets sold during this duration of the book marathon is 430 sets, that is 430 Bhagavad-gitas !!! and 430 Discover Your Self !!! All glories to Srila Prabhupada. Srila Prabhupada said that his books were like time bombs. We can’t just wait for the explosions to happen, that we took the contacts of all the students who purchased the books, so that we’ll be able to contact them about our Discover Your Self courses that we’re offering in their respective institutions.
The idea of having a student’s book distribution month in July (when most semesters begin) indeed is a great blessing to the student community to obtain Srila Prabhupada’s books. We hope to distribute more books in the coming year and provide valuable guidance in the form of Gita classes to systematically facilitate understanding into the philosophy of the Gita.
