DEEPAVALI DAMODARA 2009 OFFICIAL LAUNCH

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA

The launch of the 2009 Deepavali Damodara Festival in Malaysia was highly anticipated by the devotees of Sri Jagannatha Mandir, ISKCON Kuala Lumpur (SJMKL) for two reasons. One was that the venue of the launch was to be at the temple premises itself, unlike previous years when it was held in the Kuala Lumpur city centre. The other major reason for the excitement and joy was that this year’s launch was to be graced by the presence of His Holiness Jayapataka Swami Maharaja. HH is very dear to the devotees of the Malaysian yatra, most being his disciples.

A popular local political figure, YB Datuk Saravanan, Deputy Minister of the Federal Territory and Vice President of the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) was also invited to grace the launch of the Deepavali Damodara Festival. The launch took place on the 4th of October 2009, a day before the commencement of the Damodara Masa. The evening event commenced with a speech by the organizing chairman, HG Srivas Caitanya Dasa, who is also the Congregational Development (CD) Minister at SJMKL. HH Jayapataka Swami then shared his views with the congregation where he expressed joy and happiness at SJMKL devotees making the special effort during the month of Damodhar to spread KC amongst more people in Malaysia. Maharaj’s speech was followed by a multimedia video presentation, wherein on the success and organizational mechanics of the Damodara program, as handled by the Congregational Development Ministry (CDM) of Sri Jagannatha Mandir over the past years was outlined. Thereafter, a theatrical performance of the Damodara Lila was presented by the TASK Team of SJMKL.

The evening’s highlight was the entourage to usher the arrival of the Deputy Minister. The grand welcoming procession was made up of a cow and calf; to usher in auspiciousness and this party was also made up of a procession of drummers, trumpeters and traditionally dressed “gopis and gopas”.

After the launch was initiated by YB Datuk Saravanan, His Holiness Jayapataka Swami Maharaja offered a ghee lamp to officially commemorate the launch. HH’s gesture opened the avenue for the assembled devotees to offer ghee lamps individually to His Lordship.

For the next 45 days, the whole of the Malaysian yatra will be busy going from home to home, making it possible for the general public to offer ghee lamps to His Lordship seeking his causeless mercy.

As part of an international sharing effort, the CDM of SJMKL has provided various other yatras in Australia, Philippines, Bombay, Pune, Delhi, Chennai, South Africa, Fiji and Mauritius with the updated Damodara kit. The 2009 kit comprises an altar calendar for offering the ghee lamps and a booklet explaining the Damodara Program.

With the bleesings of Lord Sri Damodara, Their Lordships Sri Sri Jagannatha, Baladeva, Subadra Maiya and Sri Sri Nitai Gaurasunder, we pray that the Damodara Program will bring inspiration to other ISKCON Centres and facilitate the spreading of Krishna Consciousness, fulfilling the aspirations of HDG Swami Srila Prabupada.

HH Prabhavisnu Swami Vyasa Puja with HH Jayapataka Swami

Posted by iskconklnews on September 30, 2009

By Sudarshan Das

Sunday the 13th of September was indeed a red letter day in the memories of the congregation of Sri Jaganath Mandir Kuala Lumpur. It was a Sunday Feast that saw the celebration of the all auspicious Vyasa Puja ceremony of HH Prabhavishnu Swami, a co-GBC for Malaysia as well as initiating Guru of ISKCON. The bonus that made the day unforgettable was the much longed for association of HH Jayapataka Swami, yes in person!

We were told the day before that HH Jayapataka Swami will be attending the programme and the excitement it generated for everyone was contagious. This would be the first time we will be having his darshan in Malaysia, in person, after more than a year. Ever since his shocking illness and miraculous revival, Maharaj’s travel has been severely limited to allow for his recovery, being mostly confined in India. His disciples and the congregation here in Malaysia have only seen snippets of Maharaj from the internet and sorely missed his association in Malaysia. Moreover, many have been extremely worried for his health and the congregation have been constantly praying for his full recovery ever since the stroke. All of us here have been most anxious to see him, so one can imagine how the sudden news of his immanent arrival here in Malaysia was earnestly received.

The Sunday Feast began with the majestic Brahma samhita prayers sung in unison- resounding in the cintamani temple-hall of Sri Jaganath Mandir to greet our deities Sri Sri Jaganath Baladev Subathra mayi, Sri Sri Gaura Nitai, Sri Sri Radha Syamasunder and Sri Narasinghadev. They were tastefully adorned in shimmering white and translucent crystal jewellery amidst a background of sky blue tapestry inlaid with patterns of silvery rose. Together with the floral arrangements, the mood accentuated by the deity “alangkar” that Sunday was one of ethereal sweetness.

Class was given by HG Ajamila prabhu, a long-time disciple of Srila Prabhupada from the UK who’s currently residing here in KL. Topic discussed was regarding the nectar and glories of the chanting of the Hare Krsna maha mantra. This was in conjunction with the recently concluded World Holy Name Week. Prabhu also later also spoke about HH Prabhavishnu Swami in honour of his Vyasa Puja to be celebrated later on that day. It was of course unavoidable that he also spoke regarding HH Jayapataka Maharaj whom we were all eagerly expecting shortly.

After a short break for simple prasadam, (as an appetizer for the huge feast later…), the Vyasa Puja of HH Prabhavishnu Swami was begun with bhajans. This was shortly followed by homages given to HH Prabhavishnu Swami. HG Amogha prabhu (a senior Prabhupad disciple) started the ball rolling as he glorified His Holiness’s courage and boldness in preaching. Next in line was HG Ajamila prabhu who continued to extol his glories as he recounted his memories of his personal dealings with His Holiness. He specifically recalled His Holiness’s compassionate and mild nature. HG Vrndavan Chandra pr our Vice chairman of ISKCON Malaysia enthusiastically shared his memories of his first meeting with His Holiness. HG Vishnu Caitanya prabhu our Temple president then amongst others, pointed out how we can take example from Maharaj on how he was a bold preacher in serving the mission of his Gurumaharaj. HG Gaurachandra pr in his capacity as councillor board chairman was then called upon to share his glorification of Maharaj.

It was then the disciples turn to speak as HG Krsna Chandra pr renewed his initiation vows and conveyed his deep gratitude to Maharaj, followed by his 70 plus “young” mother, the ever enthusiastic and the ever unperturbed bubble of joy HG Radha Vinodhini mataji who thanked everyone for helping out in the Vyasa Puja preparations. She expressed her heartfelt gratitude to Maharaj for engaging her in Krishna Consciousness.

At this time, it was almost 11.30 am and HH Jayapataka Maharaj had finally arrived! He was greeted by a tumultuous kirtan party at the road in front of the temple as a Black Mercedes Benz made its way sedately into the temple. A human chain was erected along the pathway leading to the temple to the specially prepared divan like Vyasa San. The pathway was carpeted white and strewn with flower petals as His Holiness Jayapataka Swami was ushered into the temple hall in the presence of their Lordships Jaganath Baladev Subathra, Gaura Nitai and Radha Syamasunder.

The electrifying excitement of his presence soon gave way to shock as we were unprepared to see how much his illness had taken its toll on Maharaj’s body. Physically, I found him to be a shadow of his former self, where I still remembered how he would stride in the temple room majestically like a huge lion to be followed by his retainers in his wake. Thus it was heart wrenching to see this great general of our movement making his way slowly and haltingly, supported by his caregivers as he made his way to the temple room to gaze upon his beloved deities of Sri Jaganath Mandir KL. Many were moved to tears when he asked if we could understand his speech. His Holiness looked extremely weary but he was as ever enthusiastic to give us his mercy and association. His spirit was as large and indomitable as ever and completely unfettered by his body as was evident when he gave his class and begun to glorify his dear God brother His Holiness Prabhavishnu Swami. Amongst many points, in his own words, he mentioned how he was fortunate to confer Sanyas initiation to His Holiness Prabhavishnu Swami. Maharaj then later spoke of how he was here to take therapies to help his recovery but he fooled no one as we were all fully aware that the real reason he came here was to give his merciful association to us.

Pushpanjali was then offered to His Holiness Prabhavishnu Swami’s photo on a decorated vyasa san. However the temple was so packed as many devotees from all over Malaysia had come to meet His Holiness Jayapataka Swami that for the first time in Sri Jaganath Mandir (at least as far as I recall), pushpanjali was collectively offered by one person for everyone as there was simply no space. The programme then continued with Arathi for His Holiness Prabhavishnu Swami amidst Sri Guru Vandana prayers with joyous Hari Nama kirtan in its wake led by HG Vishnu Caitanya Pr. The feast that ensued was prepared by the Bengali or Gaudadesh devotees. It was an extremely sumptuous spread worthy of note especially for such a large crowd. His Holiness Jayapataka Maharaj left soon after to his temporary rest house in PJ, a bungalow rented for his exclusive stay with his caregivers for the next couple of weeks in Malaysia.

We were truly blessed to have this rare opportunity to get his overflowing merciful association that day and for the next couple of weeks to come. It is our ardent prayer that His Holiness makes speedy recovery during his stay here in Malaysia and continues to benedict us with his association continuously. Hare Krsna.

Sri Radhastami 2009, SJMKL

Posted by iskconklnews on September 19, 2009

By Baktin Satte

Every year Sri Sri Radhastami is celebrated very grandly at Sri Jagannath Mandir, KL. This year we celebrated Radhastami on the 28th August, 2009. One notable highlight for this year is the festival was organized by all matajis under the leadership of HG Mother Shanti Rupa DD.

Srimati Radharani appeared on the eight day of the waxing moon of Hrisikesha [bhadra] masa, at noon. Among the gopis, Srimati Radhika is the foremost. She surpasses all in beauty, good qualities, good fortune and above all in love. Without the mercy of Srimati Radharani one can never attain Krsna. Therefore one must remember both Sri Krishna and Srimati Radharani together as they are always nicely situated by each other’s side. Sri Krsna says “Oh Narada I tell you truly, again truly, truly again and again without the mercy of Srimati Radharani, one cannot attain my mercy. [Narada Puran].

Fasting on Radhastami is recommended as observing special vratas brings about multiple times more benefit than Ekadasi. One should pray unto her divine Lotus Feet and glorify her auspicious qualities and be immersed in the mood of Barsana during this time.

On the day, the temple was transformed into Vrindavan Dham with beautiful chandeliers and colorful spotlights shinning on them. The altar appeared as a hanging garden with white orchids and green leaves hanging from the ceiling. The backdrop of the presiding deities has uniquely appeared with lots of leaves and crab crawl flowers decorations. It really made one feel that we were transported into another world altogether.

To whom ever I spoke to said that there was some sort of magic or mystical spiritual vibration in the air on that day. Everyone was feeling happy and blissful with the feeling of floating in the air. I am sure that Srimati Radharani’s mercy
was free flowing to put everyone in that kind of spirit on the day.

A devotee who had recently suffered a great loss of her baby, said as she walked into the temple that day, she felt lifted and a blissful feeling came over her to relief her from her months long bereavement. The kitchen saw all assigned matajis turning up in full force and completed the service on time. Many commented that the prasad was delightfully delicious.

Credit also go to the multimedia presentation team on wonderful and various images Radha Krishna deities around the world accompanied by the famous Radhe Naam song that brought smile to the lips and tears to the eyes feeling mesmerized in the beauty of Their Lordships and Their compassion for the fallen souls in this world.

After prasad all adjourned to the temple hall to chant the 108 names of Sri Sri Radharani.[Sri Sri Radhika Astottarasata Nama Stotram], followed by the singing of Radha Kirpa Kataksa and during this time the lights chose to go out. It happened twice and that put every one into great ecstasy, that they felt Srimati Radharani was engaging all in her lila.

The stage performances lined up during that evening was the first ever on a Radhastami festival in SJMKL. We had bhajan and classical number rendered by the temple president and his team followed by a play on 3 pastimes of Radharani organized and performed by matajis. The highlight of the stage show was the dance item performed by the matajis of all age groups to the song titled Radhe Naam that took us on imaginary parikram in the holy Vrndavana Dham and Barsana, the appearance place of Srimati Radharani. This item has engaged everyone in great  jubilation. All were seen lapping and beaming with smiles and laughters as they immerse into great spirits and love for Radharani..

It is on this special day that Srimati Radharani decides to gently reveal her beautiful Lotus Feet  to whoever gets her mercy to see them. Her Lotus Feet were beautifully decorated with anglets and rings on her toes which were enhanced by the redness of the kumkum on the feet.

The night ended with everyone dancing, singing to the ecstatic kirtan while the swinging of the Lordships and showering of flowers went on. In nutshell, each and everyone had a spiritually wonderful day celebrating the glories of Srimati Radharani on her appearance day. Some commented that this was one of the best Radhastami they have ever had had.

To end it all, heartfelt gratitude is extended to all matajis that came together with full cooperation harmoniously to put up a joyous and successful celebration with the blessing of Sri Sri Radharani.

Srimati Radharani ki Jai,

Srila Prabhupad ki Jai

On Saturday the 22nd of August, the Vyasa Puja of HH Bhakti Caitanya Swami was celebrated in traditional ISKCON way, with the true spirit of remembering and glorifying a Vaishnava, on the actual tithi. Disciples and aspiring disciples of HH Bhakti Caitanya Swami, namely HG Gaura Chandra Prabhu, HG Radhesyama Mataji, Bhaktin Satte Mataji and Bhaktin Dr Saraswathy Mataji were the driving force behind a very successful and well organized festival.

Devotees were invited and notified well in advance so that they could put the dates in their diary and thus taste the nectar of participating in the glorification of a sincere and pure devotee of the Lord who is trying to assist Srila Prabhupada and Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu in the Sankirtan movement. HG Radhesyama Mataji and Bhaktin Satte Mataji personally invited devotees by giving invitation flyers and by sending mobile text messages.

To celebrate the most auspicious occasion and for the pleasure of the Lord and His devotees, a team of dedicated devotees took up the seva of cooking the feast. HG Sudarshan Prabhu, who is a very inspiring cook, took up the seva of cooking Biryani rice and paneer sabji. The Mataji’s who manage the daily lunch prasad seva kindly cooked roti channei and HG Subal Mitra Prabhu and his family were in charge of the overall cooking of the Vyasa Puja feast. We also had few motivated Mataji’s who helped the cooking team.

The deity bhoga offering was coordinated by HG Radhesyama Mataji who got a few Mataji’s to cook a grand offering and another six Mataji’s to each make a cake, so that there were six cakes of about 1 kg. There were about 100 offerings in total for the pleasure of their Lordships Sri Sri Jagannatha Baladeva and Subhadra Mai.

The Vyasa Puja celebrations started at 11.30 am with Vaishnava bhajans glorifying the spiritual master. By noon we had a temple full of devotees eagerly waiting to glorify HH Bhakti Caitanya Swami as part of the offerings session. Everyone got an opportunity to glorify and some of the important qualities of Maharaj which were highlighted were his attachment to Vrindavan and Mayaypur dham; his ability to narrate pastimes of Lord Krishna in Vrindavan; and the variety of topics on which Maharaj has given insightful discourses.

The festival came to a glorious end with ararti accompanied by Gurvastakam prayers glorifying the spiritual master. A grand feast was then served for the pleasure of all assembled and it showed the true spirit of unity we have in SJMKL where disciples of all different spiritual masters come to celebrate these auspicious days.

Note from disciples and aspiring disciples of HH Bhakti Caitanya Swami:

We, the disciples and aspiring disciples of HH Bhakti Caitanya Swami, were very touched by the attendance and support given by devotees who graced the occasion, and we would like to thank them all very much. Many said that by chance they were fasting until the feast was served. The occasion had its special flavor because of the mercy of our Guru Maharaj.

Sri Krishna Janmastami SJMKL

Posted by iskconklnews on August 24, 2009

SKJ 09 003

By Kasthuri Krishna Devi Dasi

Sri Krishna Janmastami 2009, SJMKL

Just as Lord Balarama appears in the womb of Devaki before Krishna appears—to purify and prepare the atmosphere, we have to take shelter of Krishna in a spirit of devotion, fear the power of maya, and never let go of Krishna’s mercy, never let go of the association of devotees who are saving us at every moment, and we’ll become purified.(His Holiness Radhanath Swami, Gokula Mahavan, Vrindavan Yatra 2004)

On that note the congregation of Sri Jagannath Mandir Kuala Lumpur (SJMKL) had been preparing the soul, mind and body to welcome the anniversary of Lord Krishna’s appearance by various forms of services to awaken that spirit and mood of Krishna Janmastami. Apart from extra hearing and reading about Krishna, devotees were  engaged in various services such as distributing invitations, cleaning the temple, procurement of bhoga, publicities are just to name a few of the preparations done to ensure that the festival is celebrated with great pomp and grandeur for the benefit of one and all.

After more than a month sinking in bereavement  following the sudden departure of HG Uttama Caitanya das prabu, the former president of SJMKL, the congregation is now actively back on the track to celebrate the most grand and auspicious anniversary of Lord Krishna’s appearance on 14th August 2009.

Despite being a working day, the events were arranged for the full day. The Vedic culture requires one to receive the guests in most warm and exquisite manner so much so that during Maharaja Yuddhistira’s Rajasuya sacrifice, Lord Krishna Himself took charge of washing the feet of all the incoming guests. In SJMKL, the reception team welcomed the guests of Lord Sri Jagannath with warm smiles and greetings, flowers, kum kum powder, rose water, perfumed oil and friendly gestures by providing itineraries and temple layout map to the guests as a guide throughout the festival. The VOICE team’s initiative to arrange a bus load of 50 UNITEN college students to attend the festival is laudable.

Guests were guided into the beautifully decorated temple hall by the flower/decoration team to take darshan of our presiding deities Lord Sri Jagannath, Baladeva and Subathra Devi, Lord Sri Radha Syamasundar and Lord Sri Nitai Gaurasundar. Their Lordships appeared majestic for public darshan in their gorgeous blue and purple outfit, in the midst of garden of pink roses. The guests were then gestured to take part in the abhishek ceremony for Sri Sri Radha Krishna which went on until 9.30pm. Simultaneously prashadam was served and guests were entertained with various stage programs and exciting performances ranging from carnatic and gaudiya bhajans, colorful dances and plays on Krishna’s pastimes from 8pm until midnight. We also had booths set up to reach out to the guests for various reasons consisting of one booth for book stall, and 2 booths by the VOICE team for preaching and spiritual theater. Food for Life and BCC-ISKCON Malaysia Temple Building Projects taken up one booth each for donation drive. Finally the savories stall, a place of sweet prashadam delicacies sold.

Special feature of the festival was the presence of Datuk Panjamurti, Secretary of MIC KL and chairman of Kepong’s division. Datuk attended the festival representing Datuk Saravanan, the Deputy Minster of Federal territory. On the other hand we were also privileged to have the presence of HG Simheswara Das, the Secretary General of ISKCON Malaysia to grace the festival. Being fascinated with the wonderful services, performances and engagements by the youths in our temple, Datuk made a noteworthy point in his public address. He firmly believes that if the youths are properly engaged in such spiritual movements and activities, they will be better off in terms of their discipline hence making the society a better place to live in. We look forward to secure goodwill with the government by opening up our temple and festivals to the public on a higher scale by establishing mutual understanding and warm relationship between the government and ISKCON movement in Malaysia.

It was then the time for the devotees to rejoice into midnight hour to usher the appearance anniversary of Lord Sri Krishna with arati and kirtan. The day came to an end with the swing ceremony of Sri Sri Radha Krishna and devotees honoring Jagannath’s Mahaprashadam. The cleaning team swings into action immediately to prepare the temple premise and its vicinity to be available for the next day’s festival to celebrate the appearance day of Lord Krishna’s beloved devotee and jagat guru His Divine Grace Baktivedanta Srila Prabupada (ki jai!)

HDG Srila Prabhupada’s Vyasa Pooja 2009, SJMKL

The presiding deities of Sri Jagannath Mandir Kuala Lumpur looked splendid in their black and gold outfit that morning. At 10am the bathing ceremony for HDG began with the senior devotees such as HG Vrndavan Candra das prabu, HG Simheswara das prabu, Markendeya Rishi das prabu and followed by others. The abhishek ceremony lasted for an hour and at around 1130am, the glorification slot took place to provide opportunities to devotees to glorify and thank Prabhupad for where we are now. With smooth coordination and timeliness, the glorification ceremony ended at 1pm to give way to pushpanjali led by HG Simheswara das prabu.

The culmination of the grandest annual Vyasa Pooja was the arati and kirtan. The Gauradesh devotees cooked and served prashadam for 600 people and again the cleaning team got back on their feet to clean up the temple.

Despite the threat of the recent H1N1 pandemic, which has resulted in a small decline from previous year, the management is nevertheless pleased to announce that the total crowd for Janmastami was approximately 2500. The management also dedicates the success of this festival to HG Uttama Caitanya das prabu, our late president as gratitude for having trained up the congregation to manage and handle this major festival in absence of HG.

The management finally wishes to thank all the involved parties, and devotees who have rendered so many services on individual and collective basis to make this festival a success. We may have missed or overlooked to extend our appreciation to some devotees that have rendered service tirelessly for the success of these 2 festivals, but rest assured that the All Knowing Supreme Lord would not have missed casting His glance on everyone that have engaged in even the smallest service for the pleasure of the Lord and His devotees. In this endeavor there is no loss or diminution, and a little advancement on this path can protect one from the most dangerous type of fear. BG2.40

Jhulan Yatra SJMKL

Posted by iskconklnews on August 21, 2009

Balaram poornima 09 073

By Sudarshan Das

jhula jhule radha damodara vrndavana men kaisi cchayi hariyali ali kunjan men

(Sri Sri Radha-Damodara are swinging on the swing in Vrndavana. Oh friend, how very green the kunja is!)

Yes, this was the sweetest of festivals, the 5 day long Sri Sri Radha Krishna Jhulan Yatra, which was recently celebrated in Sri Jaganath Mandir Kuala Lumpur starting from Saturday, the 1st of August.

In the holy dham of Sri Vrndavan, this period of the sacred month of Shravan, which falls during the auspicious 4 month period of caturmasya, bears witness to hundreds of thousands of people from surrounding towns and villages and from all over India and abroad, who have all blissfully congregated to participate in the Jugala kishora and kishori monsoon pastimes where the Radha Krishna deities in the temples are swung on a swing. This was a time where the hot summer begins to give way to the thunderous approach of the rain clouds marking the beginning of the monsoon seasons. Extremely fine mist-like rain drizzles everywhere casting the entire forests of Vrindavan in a lush emerald hue. The caressing touch of the gentle drizzle awakens the blooming of flowers of the forests and the entire atmosphere tingles with festive joy in a kaleidoscope of fresh colours with music & devotion permeating the air.

Yamuna ke kula, pahari suranga dulala kaise khila rahe phula, ali kadamana mein

(On the banks of the Yamuna they are wearing very beautiful and colorful clothes. O friend, how the flowers are blossoming on the kadamba tree!)

Here in Sri Jaganath Mandir Kuala Lumpur, this blissful festive mood was recreated, albeit in a more humble magnitude, but with no less joy and devotion. The swinging of their Lordships was held each day at eight in the mornings and at 7.30 in the evenings. The Sunday feast that coincided with this festival was especially sweet. HG Vinod Bihari prabhu who had experienced this festival in Vrndavan dham for 14 years was there to lead the Jaya Radhe Jaya Krishna song as the devotees swung their Lordships Sri Sri Radha Gokulananda. As his fingers magically swept along the keys in his harmonium, his voice lifted beautifully in sweet reminiscence that infected the mood of everyone there.

ita nandan ko dularo, uta bhanu ki dulari, jodi lage ati pyari, basi nainana mein.

(On this side is the dear son of Nanda, on that side is the very dear daughter of Vrsabhanu Maharaja. Both look very beautiful; I keep them within my vision.)

The origins of this festival traces back 5000 years to Krishna’s pastimes in Vrindavan. The beginning of the monsoon season has not entirely dissipated the heat of the passing summer, and the opulence at this time is to find a breeze, as the air is heavy with the humidity of the rains. So the gopi friends of Srimati Radharani arrange for the pleasure and satisfaction of Krishna, and Srimati Radhika by placing them on a swing or Jhulan and creating their own breeze from the motion.

gaura syama ranga, ghana damini ke sanga bhai ankhiyan apanga, cchabi bhari man mein

(Their golden and dark colors are like lightening on a dark cloud. My eyes do not close; that picture fills my mind.)

In Kuala Lumpur, as per the local annual tradition as far back as I can remember since joining ISKCON, the culmination of the festival was on the 5th day in the home of HG Tatvavit Prabhu and HG Shanti Rupa Mataji, very senior devotees and dear servants of their beloved deity Sri Sri Radha Gokulananda. The entire KL and Klang yatra congregated at their bungalow in PJ on the Wednesday evening to celebrate. His Holiness Janananda Goswami graced the festival and led the kirtan and class. He spoke of the sweet pastimes of the divine couple and lead a sweet bhajan for the pleasure of their Lordships. Sri Sri Radha Gokulananda are one of the sweetest deities that I have ever seen- especially Sri Radha. They were beautifully decorated and placed on a creeper like swing amidst lush green plants and flowers. Bhajans continued through the evening as first class feast was served.

radhe mukha aur, naina syama ke cakora sakhi

(Radha’s face is like the moon; Krishna’s eyes are like the cakora bird [attracted to the moon], looking towards Her.)

And the next day was the full moon day of Balaram’s appearance! Indeed in Sri Jaganath Mandir, there is no shortage of festivals to keep our minds and limbs constantly engaged in bliss and constant remembrance of Radha Krishna. This was possible only due to the causeless mercy of Srila Prabhupada and the wonderful devotees of Sri Jaganath Mandir.

Smriti Sabha of HG Uttama Caitanya Pr

Sri Sri Jaganath Baladeva Subhaadra Maiya ki,Jaya

Sri Sri Gaura Nitai ki,Jaya

Sri Sri Nrsinghadev ki,Jaya

Srila Prabhupada ki, Jaya

It was a cool overcast morning with the promise of rain unfulfilled on the Sunday morning of 26 July 2009, that greeted family, friends, admirers and well wishers from all over Malaysia and a few parts of the world who were all gathered at Sri Jaganath Mandir Kuala Lumpur to attend the glorious Smrthi Sabha ceremony of its late beloved president and visionary leader, His Grace Uttama Caitanya Das Brahmacari. This was a celebration of his outstanding life and work, and in a way, the marking of a close of an era in the chapter of ISKCON Kuala Lumpur and of ISKCON Malaysia as a whole.

The service began as in a typical Sunday morning with Darshan Arati. The Deities were very sweet and resplendent in the very colors and dresses that were the personal favorites of His Grace Uttama prabhu during the times he used to do the dressing service. This was followed by Guru Puja and Kirtan. Shortly after recitation of Sri Sikshastakam prayers and group Japa, the memorial ceremony began proper with a discourse given by HG Ajamila prabhu, a very senior Prabhupada disciple, who spoke on the deep philosophy concerning the disappearances of Vaishnavas. He spoke very poignantly of how devotees are always protected by the Lord in all circumstances and how the effect of the process of chanting the Hare Krsna Maha Mantra throughout ones life can be practically seen working at the time of death especially in the manner of one’s passing.

After a short breakfast, at about 9.30am, HG Mulakarnam prabhu presented a PowerPoint slide show showcasing a collection of photographs about the life and activities of HG Uttama Caitanya prabhu, right from his early childhood (then known as Umakanthan), through his college days and social work years, all the way through his ISKCON life till his passing and cremation. The collection of memories immortalized in those photographs left quite a number of people in the audience blurry eyed and overcome with grief.

Soon after, the eulogies began. This was the day all of us came together and were united not only in our desire to pay our respects to His Grace Uttama Caitanya prabhu, but rather in our need to do so, for the outpouring of offerings were numerous and almost all were heart rending and yet inconceivably sweet, which left us washed and purified in its wake, leaving only a sense of deep loss.

HG Simheswara prabhu as ISKCON Malaysia Secretary General was given the honor of first offering to HG Uttama Caitanya pr, followed by HG Vrndavan Candra prabhu who was visibly emotional. HG Markandeya pr who was his close friend made a beautiful offering in Tamil about how the Lord brings his dear devotee back. HG Uttama pr’s sister gave a heart rending homage describing his early qualities and activities and left most of us in tears with a heart wrenching thank you to the SJMKL congregation for giving our love to him. This was followed by HG Tyaga Caitanya pr who was the first one to welcome him to SJMKL back in 1986. He spoke on how they used to stay in Vrndavan together and have many intimate conversations sharing their realizations of the Dham. HG Dvija Gauranga pr from Bukit Mertajam, also spoke about their close friendship. HG Uttama pr’s aunty then spoke of his determination in taking up Brahmachari vows many years back when he was staying at her home in Singapore. She spoke on many memories on how simple and austere he was and encapsulated the essence in a sweet Tamil poem which she read. In honor of His Grace’s eloquence in giving spiritual discourses in Tamil, Her Grace Shanti Rupa mataji offered a beautiful poem in Tamil glorifying him in how he lived up to the purport oh his name “Uttama” which means topmost, in all that he did. Many others submitted their offerings as well, we had HG Devaki Nandana pr the temple president from Singapore, HG Ravilocan pr, HG Tatvavit pr and others. Notably, Tan Seri Datuk Seri Dr. Mahadevan who was present also gave his short address in glorifying the departed. Amongst others present was Datin Paduka Mother Manggalam of the Pure Life Divine Society who knew him personally. HG Krishna Candra pr, who was the facilitator, shared with us many light memories of HG Uttama pr.

A small skit was planned and performed at about 11.30am by Vraja Arts Theatre in tribute of His Grace Uttama Caitanya pr who was also the founder. It was about the passing of Haridas Thakur, a very apt theme for the occasion, masterfully performed, and sending forth a powerful and soothing message that the passing of a Vaishnava is always glorious.

The culmination of the ceremony was at noon with the offering of Arati and ghee lamps by HG Tatvavit pr and HG Tyaga Caitanya pr to the photo of HG Uttama Caitanya Pr amidst the singing of “Ohe Vaishnava Thakura” by the congregation. This was followed by Puspanjali amidst ecstatic Kirtan in the very temple hall where in life, memories of HG Uttama pr himself leading the kirtan was in our thoughts.

HG Uttama prabhu would always ensure that guests of the temple were always fed prasadam sumptuously. In his honor, an enormous feast was served at the end of the ceremony.

We especially would like to thank HG Simheswara pr, National Council leaders, leaders from Singapore and other parts of Malaysia, Tan Seri Datuk Seri Dr. Mahadevan, Datin Paduka Mother Mangallam, and devotees from Thailand, Bali and India who were there to grace the occasion.

Much appreciation is lauded to HG Mathura Lilesvari mtj for her thoughtfulness in starting a tribute Blog that sees more than 50 offerings from world ISKCON community and Maharajas, HG Mulakarnam pr for preparing the PowerPoint show, to HG Krsna Chandra pr for coordinating the homage’s, to Kamalanthan pr and Bhakta Nadesh and team for the skit performance, to Sriman Mayur and team for wonderful service of taking care of the guests and HG Uttama Caitanya Pr’s family members, to HG Shanti Rupa mtj and team for the excellent feast, to HG Sarva Tirta pr and Team for the prasad serving coordination, To HG Vishnu Caitanya pr and HG Ravi Locana pr for the overall planning and coordination of the Smrti Sabha ceremony and also to HG Ramananda Gaura pr and team for the seating arrangements.

On behalf of SJMKL management we would also like to thank all the various sponsors and devotees who assisted in making this Smrthi Sabha ceremony of our beloved and much missed president an unforgettable event etched forever in our hearts, for such was his presence in life as was befitting his glorious passing. He was like the cool breeze that blew in and touched everyone and alike, and which suddenly left us at a thought leaving a vacuum in our hearts. However, his legacy and his instructions will live on, and armed with the presence and support of each other, we will traverse the uncharted waters of a new era in ISKCON KL and Malaysia as would have been his ardent desire, as is our responsibility to him, Guru and Gauranga.

Jagannatha

Hare Krishna

Sri Sri Jagannatha Baladeva Subhadra Mai ki Jai

All glories to Srila Prabhupada

All glories to Sri Guru and Gouranga

On Sunday the 7th of June, we celebrated the most glorious Snana Yatra festival for the pleasure of Sri Sri Jagannatha Baladeva and Subhadra Mai. This marks the appearance day of the Lord Jagannatha (Lord of the universe) in this merciful form to captivate the hearts of the devotees. The festival is specially celebrated by performing abhishek of their lordships Sri Jagannatha Baladeva and Subhadra Mai. This festival also marks a recuperating period from the bout of illness for Their Lordships until the Rath Yatra festival. So this is significant festival as we are separated from lord for 16 days and thus it allows us to develop the mood Lord Caitanya preached of longing in separation.

In our temple SJMKL we were blessed to have association of HH Prabhavisnu Maharaj( co-GBC) to provide us guidance and inspiration to serve the Lord with correct attitude. We started our festival with regular Sunday program which started with darshan arati of their Lordships who looked ever beautiful. Then we had SP guru puja, Japa session and Siksastakam prayers followed by Srimad Bhagvatam class by HH Prabhavisnu Maharaj. Then HG Uttama Caitanya prabhu presided over the SJMKL annual report presentation to update Maharaj on the preaching and congregation development programs in the past year. Then breakfast prasadam was served consisting of delicious kitchari and fruits.

The main celebrations for snana yatra festival then started with abhishek for their Lordships outside the temple hall. All the while kirtan was sung by devotees to help us engage our tongue for tasting sweet mellows of ever enchanting Holy Names of the supreme lord. All the guests and devotees took this rare opportunity to directly render service by performing abhishek thus cleansing their hearts. After the abhishek ceremony maharaj shared pastimes of Lord Jagannatha mainly of this special form the lord has taken and its significance.

After the class a drama was performed by devotees showing the advent of Lord jagannatha on this planet. The drama pastime included the life history of Indradyumna Maharaja and his intimate love and hankering to take darshan of Nila Madhava. The drama beautifully showed how Lord bestows special mercy on his devotees by assuming this special form of Lord Jagannatha. The drama was very well performed with nice costumes, lot of emotions and well written script and dialogues.

Around 1:30pm after the drama raj boga arati was performed for the pleasure of Their lordships with many bhoga offerings. A resounding kirtan also took place which made all the devotees dance and loudly chant the holy names of the lord. Afterwards lunch prasad was served for the pleasure of all the assembled consisting of many varieties of dishes.

This festival helped us connect with Lord Jagannatha Baladeva and Subhadra mai and their intimate pastimes with devotees. It also helped set the tone and mood for the upcoming rath yatra which we are now eagerly awaiting. Devotees are welcome to bring nice fruits for offering for Lord Jagannath while he in his recuperation peiod.

Jai Jai Sri Radhe Shyam

Family Day at Bukit Jalil

Posted by iskconklnews on June 5, 2009

FamilyDay

By Bhaktin Satte

HARE KRSNA
ALL GLORIES TO GURU AND GUARANGA.
ALL GLORIES TO SRILA PRABHUPADA!!!

The Family Day on the 24th.May 2009 started with beautiful cool morning since it had rained the night before after a long spell of dry weather.

About 200 hundred devotees gathered at Bukit Jalil around 8.30am. The morning Srimad Bhagavatam class by HH. BVV Narasimha Maharaja added an extra spiritual flavor.  Maharaja primarily spoke about the glories of Srimad Bhagavatam and its importance in our lives. Then Srila Prabhupada guru puja by HH Narasimha Maharaj was conducted and a lively kirtan took place with devotees chanting and dancing in ecstasy going round the park and distributing the Holy Names freely.

Since it was “Potluck” arrangement the devotees whole heartedly prepared an array of delicious dishes for prasadam. This really goes to show the love and the spirit of togetherness in our congregation following in line with teachings of our acharyas. The devotees had a hearty breakfast prasad after the kirtan to their satisfaction.

A number of entertaining games were lined up for the children, matajis and prabhus by the organizing committee. Almost all who were present took part in the games. The prabhus were seen having a wonderful time with their games. The prabhus took part in host of games which included kabaddi, football, tug-of-war and balancing acts with spoons in the mouth.  As HG Ravi Locan Prabhu mentioned the rule of the games was to break all the rules.

The matajis too seemed to be really enjoying with with the tug-of-war game. Young, old and middle age, all took part in it. The matajis game ended with the fun filled musical chairs. Even the children too were having their own set of games lined up for them by the Gokul Garden teachers. The children thoroughly enjoyed the treasure hunt.

As HG Amrita Guarangi matagi mentioned, the most important thing in outing like this is the bonding, congregation getting closer, knowing one another as well enjoying the games and prasadam. A brother and sister team who also contributed a special Bengali sabji from Gauradesh Group conveyed they really enjoyed themselves.

As the day progressed and sun was right overhead the weather became really hot. We had a short Kirtan and the prizes were given to the lucky winners who participated in the games.

Lunch Prasadam was served around 1 pm which everyone relished after all the games. The special treat of ice-cream which was kindly sponsored by Bhakta Kuna and family was a welcome sight in the hot weather especially for the children.

All in all it was a wonderful and eventful day everyone enjoyed, bonded together and carried blissful moments in their hearts. The spirit of togetherness prevailed which pleases Srila Prabhupada and it forms a conducive environment to practice Krishna Consciousness together as a big family.
