Preaching for Krishna

Posted by iskconklnews on April 30, 2009

By Bhakta Prakash

Hare Krsna,

All glories to Srila Prabhupada
All glories to Sri Guru and Gauranga

I would like to share some preaching activities I have attended recently on last Wednesday 22nd April at Athi Shankarar Thirumadam. Apparently, they were celebrating the appearance day of Sripad Sankararcharya and we were invited for a bhajans and katha sessions. This arrangement was made thru the contact of Sriman Saravanakugen, directly with the chief priest of the Ashram, Shivacarya Mahendra Gurukal. We were given a short slot from 2030 hours till 2130 hours.

A group of 10 devotees gathered at the Ashram by 2030 hours. It was very nice to see the devotees are ever motivated to come for such program beside their busy routine chores. Some are as far as Serendah, Rawang. It’s truly amazing to have the association of such enthusiastic devotees.

After their prayers at 2020 hours and after some addressing speech, our team took the center stage headed HG Rasika Murari pr. He started with a slow and melodious Kirtan. The 60 odd participants were listening but could not follow till we distributed the Hare Krsna Maha Mantra card to each and everyone assembled there. So this time HG led the crowd to chant the Maha Mantra word by word for few times till they got the hang of it. Before we knew it, they were truly enjoying it!!

HG then continued with another slow tune and at this time I could see some in the crowd really singing the mantra and in fact some were raising their hand high on air. By now, the Ashram boys joined in with their musical instruments creating a vibrant and tumultuous chanting of the Maha Mantra, which was simply amazing! At one point I witnessed the chief priest Sivaacharaya Mahendra Gurukal closed his eyes and chanted the holy name in ecstasy.

After about 20 minutes into ecstatic kirtan, HG Rasika Murari pr. end it abruptly and gave a simple yet informative introduction to Bhagavad-gita tactfully connecting the Sripad Sankarcarya’s Bhasya and it connections and applications with our daily life. HG briefly touched on the five main subject of Bhagavad-gita and the important of the scriptural injunctions in human form of life.

After speaking about 15 minutes, HG started chanting the Maha Mantra in a upbeat tune and continue with Sita Ram Bhajan. The karatals, mrdanga plus with tabla and other instruments makes the kirtan sound tumultuous. I felt the real joy and especially when the entire crowd started to sing along. They were in utter bliss. They were spontaneously attracted to that name of Sri Ram. Then the short but vibrant kirtan ended with a glorification to Srila Prabhupada..

Everyone seems blissful, especially, the chief priest. He spoke on the glorification of the holy names of Lord Sri Ram and Lord Sri Krsna. He agreed with our speaker and emphasized that Harinam is the greatest in this age of Kali. He also admitted that the more we chant the name of Lord Sri Hari, the more we could experience the joy within and pleaded everyone to keep chant the name of Lord Sri Hari. He then recommends the reading of Bhagavad-gita as one of important daily chores in our lives.

The whole program was simply wonderful!!! We felt the joy of chanting and sharing the Maha Mantra with people in general. I am looking forward to this kind of programs in the future. Hope the other congregation members also organize such events and share the joy with all and especially us here in Haritosanam. It would definitely serve as one of motivating tools for others to emulate.

Merciful Nrsimhadev

Posted by iskconklnews on April 24, 2009

By Amogha das

A few years ago I presented a photo table at a Sunday feast at one of our temples. One devotee came up to the table and held a photo of Lord Nrsimhadev in his hands. I encouraged him to take Lord Nrsimhadev home, but he said, “If I was qualified to worship Him!” and quickly walked away. He seemed to be afraid of Lord Nrsimhadev.

More recently my daughter and her husband removed the photo of Lord Nrsimhadev from their altar because they heard that some couples had been devastated by worshiping an Ugra Nrsimha Deity in their home. Ugra Nrsimha is the terrifying form of the Lord standing ready to attack the demons and totally destroy them, in order to save His devotee Prahlad. To worship Him in His Deity form one must be strictly celibate, and there are many strict rules and methods of worship. One point is that having a photo of a Deity on an altar is not the same as having a Deity, but more importantly, Lord Nrsimhadev in Mayapur is extremely merciful.

If we read about the appearance and pastimes of Mayapur Lord Nrsimhadev as published by His Grace Pankajanghri Prabhu, we will find that the Deity maker warned devotees of possible devastation if they incorrectly worship Ugra Nrsimha. However, because this Nrsimha Deity would be appearing in the land of Gauranga, He would be different from Ugra Nrsimha because He would adopt the mood of the predominating Deity of that place. That mood, the mood of Nityananda and Gauranga, is to forget the faults of devotees and only see their devotion, and bless them with love for Krishna.

It is written that Lord Nityananda is Lord Balaram plus mercy. He is non-different than Lord Balaram, yet He is different than Lord Balaram because of His unprecedented mercy upon the fallen souls. In fact, the abode of Nitai Gauranga is called “audharya,” which means it manifests mercy upon the devotees regardless of their faults.

In a similar way, Lord Nrsimhadev at ISKCON Mayapur is non-different than Ugra Nrsimha, yet He is very different than Ugra Nrsimha because of His unprecedented mercy. Therefore I have started the narasimhalila.com web site with the title “Merciful Nrsimhadev.”

Careful study of the pastimes here will give us the realization that this Mayapur Nrsimhadev is extremely kind and merciful to all.
After we offered a night set of clothing to Merciful Nrsimhadev a few years ago, Jananivas Prabhu sat down with my wife Mohini Rupa and me in the temple. He told us that Lord Nrsimhadev derives ecstasy from serving Gauranga by helping devotees of His sankirtan movement.

I pondered the idea of one form of the Lord serving another. Isn’t it true that Lord Balaram manifest’s Lord Krishna’s shoes, umbrella and other paraphernelia to serve Him? Isn’t it true that Lord Nityananda serves Gauranga? And Advaita Acarya?”

I had often thought about the photographs I make of Merciful Nrsimhadev, feeling that His face reveals not anger but a huge ecstatic smile. Hearing Jananinvas Prabhu’s words confirmed that feeling. His eyes may reveal a deep ecstasy, on the level of the enjoyment of the the Supreme Lord–an interesting meditation.

As stated in the accounts that are displayed at www.narasimhalila.com, “Although very ferocious, the lioness is very kind to her cubs. Similarly, although very ferocious to non-devotees like Hiranyakasipu, Lord Nrsimhadeva is very, very gentle and kind to His
devotees like Prahlada Maharaja.”

Lord Nrsimhadev appeared to a devotee to say “There is no need to fear Me. Please give up this fear.” We should take this to heart and not fear this most unusual form of Lord Nrsimhadev residing in Gauranga’s abode. Worshiping Him will bring love and protection, not devastation.

your servant,
Amogha das

Gaura Purnima Celebration in Taman Sentosa

Posted by iskconklnews on April 24, 2009

By Bhaktin Shobna Shree

21 March 2009, Taman Sentosa, Klang

The congregation of Taman Sentosa, Klang, celebrated Sri Gaura Purnima as an annual event of their yatra. HG Sarva Tirta Krsna das, the chairman of Taman Sentosa yatra, organized the festival with great enthusiasm and on a grand scale this year. The festival began with a palanquin procession of Sri Sri Gaura Nitai around Taman Sentosa.

Their Lordships graced hundreds of homes during the procession. Many families offered incense, fruits and flowers. Some families garlanded and even poured turmeric water at the feet of the devotees who were carrying the palanquin. The procession ended at a special marquee erected at the field in front of Taman Sentosa center.

The alter was beautifully decorated with flowers and pictures. The tarmac road cleverly made comfortable for devotees with the intelligent use of carpets below and shelter overhead. The organizing committee where indeed generous and went to great lengths to ensure a memorable event for their guests. This included the provision of special sinks with running tap water at strategic points.

The camaraderie and team spirit of the Klang Yatra members was evident for all to see; their harmony in dressing uniformly was a pleasant sight. The evening program started with the arati for Their Lordships and proceeded with a large congregational kirtan led by HG Rasika Murari das. This was followed by the abhishek ceremony for Their Lordships. HG Uttama Caitanya das and other senior devotees from SJMKL conducted the abhishek.

Hundreds of devotees and well-wishers participated in the abhishek where everyone had the opportunity to bath Their Lordships with upmost care and devotion. HG Uttama Caitanya das delivered a sermon on the pastimes of Their Lordships; while paying particular attention to newcomers to Krsna Consciousness and mindful of first time visitors to the Klang Yatra. For the particular benefit of the newcomers, HG narrated that Mahaprabhu descended to this material world by freely giving Krsna prema and explained that one can receive this Krsna prema simply by chanting the Hare Krsna maha-mantra. Since the Lord appears only once in a day of Brahma, everybody should take the opportunity to receive the Lord?s blessings by chanting the holy name.

The program ended with a lively kirtan by the exceptionally large congregation and sumptuous prasadam. Hundreds of devotees and well-wishers took part in this event. HG Sarva Tirta Krsna das ensured that young children where cared for via a special class, conducted for them at the center, upstairs. A special feature of the program was a cake cutting ceremony to commemorate the center?s tenth anniversary. The organizers thanked all the devotees and well-wishers for their participation and support during their festival.

Rama Navami Maha Harinam 2009 – Ampang

Posted by iskconklnews on April 24, 2009

By Rasika Murari Das

Ampang was chosen as the location this year to perform the auspicious Rama Navami maha harinam on 28th March 2009. About 30 devotees gathered at the Sri Athi Sankarar Thirumadam ashram at approximately 5.30 pm. The leaders for the maha harinam were each provided with a bag containing prasadam, Sri Jaganath Mandir Kuala Lumpur invitation cards, maha mantra cards, books, Srila Prabhupada brochures as well as a contact book to record the details of favorable prospects.

After a short briefing on the contents of the maha harinam bag, schedule, methodology of the maha harinam and proposed routes, the leaders and their enthusiastic group of devotees fanned out to their respective designated areas to distributes the Lord’s mercy via the maha mantra and the transcendental pastimes of Lord Ramachandra.

A majority of the house owners were receptive to the devotees and welcomed them into their homes to hear the sweet pastimes of Lord Ramachandra .The devotees reciprocated by extending invitations to Sri Jaganath Mandir Kuala Lumpur for the Rama Navami celebration that was to be held on April 4th 2009. Interestingly, there were house owners who initially allowed access to enter their homes, albeit reluctantly but later expressed their appreciation for our teams? sharing of the maha mantra, books, pastime stories and the bhajans that were sung. Many were inquiring on various topics of interest; demonstrating first-hand the eternal quest of every soul in matters pertaining to the Supreme Lord. The devotees managed to call on 40 homes, distributing approximately 30 books and 180 packets of prasadam to the fortunate residents in Ampang.

Devotees regrouped in the ashram at approximately 7.15 pm for an enlightening class by HG Gaura Chandra prabhu. After the class, devotees shared their experiences and expressed their joy in having participated in the maha harinam before proceeding to enjoy the simple yet delicious prasadam; which marked the end of the Rama Navami Maha Harinam for the day.

Vrindavan Gurukula Graduates Fourteen Students

Posted by iskconklnews on April 17, 2009

By Ananda Vrindavanesvari Devi Dasi

Bhaktivedanta Gurukula and International School (BGIS) in Vrindavan held it’s 4th Graduation ceremony on April 6th. Fourteen students graduated with their high school diplomas in Academics and Bhakti Yoga studies. One student completed a dual enrollment program, obtaining both the Indian Certificate of Education and an American high school diploma.

The ceremony included honoring the parents and teachers with garlands and obeisances, speeches of encouragement and appreciation, and the presentation of certificates to the students.

One particularly moving part of the program was the offering of a lamp and sankalpa thread to the students. The senior ashram teacher, representing all of the school’s teachers, offered a ghee lamp and bowed down before the students in gratitude for their efforts and achievements throughout their studentship.

Parents, community members and many alumni attended the ceremony. Graduates plan to continue their studies in many parts of the world and in a variety of fields. Ramacandra will go to Ireland to study Business Management, Madhava to Lucknow to prepare for Medicine, Nikhil to Melbourne for Chartered Accountancy, Jatin to Delhi to study Computer Animation, Gopinath to Dallas for studies in Psychology and Sociology, Madhav to Brisbane for Business Law, Shyam to South India for studies in Ayurvedic Health and Medicine, and Rahul and Shivam to engineering University.

BGIS is two schools in one – the primary Gurukula (Grades 1-8) and the secondary High School (Grades 9-12). The emphasis in the school is on character training through the practices of Bhakti Yoga (devotional service).

Each student offered a graduation speech during which they reflected on their time in the school. Jatin described how he was from a Brahmin family, and although he knew all the mantras and rituals, it wasn’t until BGIS that he was introduced to Krishna as a person and the possibility of having a unique and individual relationship with Him. He said, “My family gave me my body, BGIS gave me my soul.”

Shivam told how he joined the school with not one word of English and today he offers his speech in English. Ramacandra, from Nepal, remembered how his ashram teacher would daily check that he had done his japa meditation before getting lost in his final exam preparation. Madhava, from Australia, expressed that he felt every part of him had changed for the better by studying in Vrindavan.

We wish these students all success in life, both spiritual and occupational, so that they can contribute to making the world a better place.

Photos of the graduation can be viewed at www.bgis.org

SJMKL Management Retreat

Hare Krishna
Please accept my humble obeisances

SJMKL Management Retreat at NUBE, Port Dickson; 11 – 12th April 2009

The Congregational Development Ministry (CDM) of Sri Jaganath Mandir Kuala Lumpur (SJMKL) has organized a weekend of management retreat for those devotees actively and directly involved in temple management services. The retreat was intended to enlighten the devotees or ‘managers’ on the crucial role of the individual sadhana particularly regular hearing and chanting, for the constant purification of the self to add potent to the services executed as the famous quote goes, ‘purity is the force’.

Saturday, 11th April 2009

Arrival and opening address by Temple President, HG Uttama Caitanya Das

Upon arrival and registration, devotees were treated with simple lunch and after a brief rest, all gathered at the seminar hall around 5pm. Temple president HG Uttama prabu welcomed the 60 odd devotees with his opening speech and conducted a self assessment activity for the participants to valuate to what extent their respective services rendered in the temple are motivated and substantiated by good sadhana and vice versa.

“Individual and Collective”

With reference to the motto for the retreat i.e ‘Individual and Collective Roles in Service’ prabu explained that the serving mood in devotees should be motivated by the following factors:

i)                    the goal is to please Guru and Krishna

ii)                   the philosophy that motivates the services revolves basically around the soul

iii)                 the management style that should be adopted by all is in the mood of servant

iv)                 the focal point of the devotees should only be Lord Krishna

v)                  the valuable assets of the temple management are the devotees

Prabu also spelt out the following processes to serve as service enhancers:

i)                    hearing

ii)                   reading

iii)                 chanting

iv)                 association of devotees

v)                  to maintain the mood to serve Guru

vi)                 to attend periodical management meeting for inspirations

“Regular devotee”

Being manager of particular services in their own capacity, participants were expected to be ‘regular’ by maintaining good sadhana i.e attending Sunday Feasts, Srila Prabhupad Gurupuja, Tulasi arati, counseling meeting, reading Srimad Bhagavatam, Srimad Bhagavad Gita or Sri Caitanya Caritamrta everyday.

Prabu ended his slot at 6.40pm. Devotees then took part in Sandhya arati and energetic kirtan in the very seminar hall, park and badminton court until it was time for dinner at 7.30pm

Temple organization by HG Visnu Caitanya Das

Establishing various departments and segregations of management tasks are not an unfamiliar feature in a spiritual organizations like SJMKL for even Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu has segregated various services to the 6 Goswamis for writing scriptures, excavating holy places, preaching etc.

Substance and form

The night slot kicked off at 8.40pm with a polling session to valuate the external development of SJMKL (form) against the internal developments (substance) of the congregation. Results revealed that the form has overshadowed the substance in SJMKL. This lopsided development of the temple could indicate that there are plenty of rooms to increase hari katha sessions and more importance to be given to chanting as they are the live wire of a temple congregation

Stressing the fact that temple expansions are only meaningful if it is well balanced with its substance, prabu said that it is only possible through co-operation among all under the co-ordination of temple president and by observing the following:

i)                    shared responsibilities

ii)                   team spirit

iii)                 choosing right man for right job

iv)                 commitment

v)                  face reality

vi)                 management oneness

vii)               collective spiritual management

Restaging

As and when the need arises the temple management has the responsibilities to execute restaging programs to retain devotees in the congregation realizing the reality that devotees often succumb to the ‘life cycle’ due to lack of substance. The most prominent ways of overcoming the abovementioned issue are to get oneself linked to the Spiritual Counselor System (SCS), engage in various management departments in temple for fixed services, attending periodical management meetings and reviews for evaluation and rectification purposes.

With requests to all participants to strive towards becoming inspirational leaders and better managers, prabu at the end addressed a number of issues and comments from participants, concluding his slot for the day at 10pm.

Bhagavad Gita discourse by HG Gauracandra das (RNS)

Not depriving the devotees from the regular Sunday Feast program, the management committee of the retreat arranged the participants to assemble in the seminar hall at 5.30am for mangala arati, manasika Tulasi arati, an hour of japa session, srngara aarati and an hour of kirtan. Following that was a nectarean spiritual discourse by HG Gauracandra prabu on BG’s catur sloki text 10.9 at about 8am.

In tandem with the purpose of the retreat i.e to strike balance between temple services and individual sadhana, prabu described the joy of performing devotional services substantiated by proper sadhana and association among the devotees and eventually emerge as an ideal devotee as described by the particular BG verse. Prabu also suggested that every department should make it a point to arrange for a get together or meeting to share on their latest reading or hearings for constant fruitful association among the devotees engaged in particular services.

Wrap up by HG Visnu Caitanya das

Prabu stressed that an organization should have a proper succession formula in place to ensure continuous operation of an ideal management. The following Srila Prabhupad’s acarya strategy/formula will help an organization to achieve the above:

iii)                 bold

Always remember Krishna and never forget Krishna

The only objective of the organizing committee of this weekend retreat is to educate and enlighten the devotees who are involved in temple management to strike a balance between temple services and individual sadhana especially through the purification process of chanting and hearing, which are prominent elements in one’s devotional life. It does not only please Guru and Krishna, but ultimately prepares us to always remember Krishna and never forget Krishna.

Hare Krsna and all Glories to Sita Ram Lakshman Hanuman. Sita Ram Lakshman Hanuman ki jai!

The celebration of Sri Ram Navami Festival at SJMKL on Saturday, April 4, 2009

Ram Navami is one of the festivals that is celebrated on a big scale at SJMKL for the pleasure of their lordships. However, this particular year, it was much more elaborate as the next day was the celebration of HH Jayapataka Swami Maharaj’s 60th Vyasa Puja Mahotsava. On the Ram Navami day itself the adivas celebration took place and was attended by many disciples and other devotees.

As usual the Ram Navami celebration began with the Mangala Arati and was followed by other regular programs with lectures on the glories of Lord Ram, bhajans etc. This year, the deities looked majestic in their bluish attire with wonderful garlands and with a matching backdrop. The altar was also very nicely decorated with flower bouquets and other decorations in the interior and exterior of the temple. The kitchen area was swinging with full activity after Mangala Arati as devotees, headed HG Shanti Rupa Mataji, had begun preparing the sumptuous prasad to be served to all the devotees and well wishers in the evening.

Although the celebrations were scheduled for the entire day, the main function took place in the evening with Tulasi Arati at 6.30 pm. There were more than 600 people in the temple with many newcomers.  By the time Gaura Arati started, the temple hall was filled with people. It has been a norm for the past four years or so that just before the evening programs begin, Lord Indra showers his blessings. On this particular day however, Lord Indra decided to shower his blessings much earlier at about 3.00 pm instead of the later part of the evening.  So, we were expecting that the weather in the evening would be fine. However, just as the abhishek was to begin at about 7.30 pm, Lord Indra gave us additional blessings. There was a downpour which lasted about 45 minutes.  It was as though Lord Indra too wanted to take part in the abhishek of Mother Sita, Lord Ram, Lakshman and Hanunam jee. The rain did not dampen the spirit of all those gathered there who were patiently queuing to take part in the abhishek. It however did cause some delay in serving prasadam to all those who attended the function.

At about 8.30 pm, there was a very wonderful spiritual discourse on Lord Rama, given by HG Tyaga Caitanya Prabu, which was well received by all the people gathered in the temple. At about 9.30 pm the much awaited stage show on Lord Rama lila was performed on centre stage by the members of the Vraja Arts Theatre under the direction of Kamanathan Prabhu. Even before the drama had begun the place outside the temple hall was already crowded, especially with children who wanted to be as close as possible to the stage. As the drama was being performed, the entire crowd in the temple was centred outside the temple hall to watch the show in a very attentive mood. The drama was very well presented and as usual it was one of the highlights of the festival.

Finally, at about 10.15 pm the grand finale took palace, with Sandhya Arati followed by the transferring of the deities of Sita Ram Lakshman and Hanuman from the altar to the very beautifully decorated swing. There was an offering of archana to the deities and of course an ecstatic kirtan taking place simultaneously.  The function came to an end at about 11pm. The next day was going to be another big day for the devotees, as it was the 60Th Vyasa Puja celebration of HH Jayapataka Swami Gurumaraj.

Hare Krsna

HH Jayapataka Swami Maharaj 60th Vyasa Puja Mahotsava

5th April 2009 (Sunday) was a special memorable occasion for the congregational family of Sri Jagannath Mandir Kuala Lumpur (SJMKL) as it was the Vyasa Puja festival of HH Jayapataka Swami, whose many disciples reside in Malaysia. The event was ingeniously planned by the temple management team to spread over two days, the Adivas celebration on Saturday and the main Vyasa Puja festival on Sunday, for the entire day.

Adivas Celebration – Saturday, 4th April 2009

A simple program that lasted for about 45 minutes with many hymns recited and 25 auspicious articles were offered to a majestic picture of Gurumaharaj placed in gorgeously decorated Vyasana next His Divine Grace A.C Bhaktivedant Swami Srila Prabhupada.

60th Vyasa Puja Mahotsava of HHJPS – Sunday, 5th April

The day began with the usual arathi for the presiding deities, their Lordships Sri Sri Jagannath, Baladev and Subadra Maiya, Sri Sri Gaura Nitai and Sri Sri Radha Madhav, also arathi was done for HDG Srila Prabhupad.

After the arathi and kirtan sessions, there was a multimedia video shown of last years vyasa puja lecture by HH JPS in Sridham Mayapur, where Gurumaharaj spoke about the position and importance of a spiritual master being the confidential servant of the Lord. The cooking for this event began as early as 7.00a.m. and was led by HG Shanti Rupa Mataji and HG Siddhi Prabhu. After the video lecture concluded, the homage made to Srila Gurudev began with over 50 disciples and well wishers presenting their achievements, aspirations and honest wishes for Guru Maharaj especially in his current saddening situation. Wondrous clever poem compositions were presented by disciples. After the homage ceremony ended, an admirable organized pushpanjali offering was led by HG Uttama Caitanya Prabhu to honor Srila Gurudev. The first part of the vyasa puja celebration ended at 1.30pm with a total of 500 congregations feasting of mouth watering prasad. A second part was scheduled to begin in the evening on the same day at 5.15pm

Kirtan was the first itinerary on the evening programs list, led by HG Visnu Caitanya Prabhu and HG Rasika Murari Prabhu. Meanwhile HG Giri Gopal Prabhu who leads the southern state Johor Bahru’s Yatra was preparing the Narasimha Yajna which began at 7.30pm for the well being of Guru Maharaj. The temple management planned wonderful entertainment for their congregation by presentation a multimedia presentation about HHJPS which was also sent to Sridham Mayapur’s Congregation Development Ministry to be shown there at their request. After which an inspiring bhajan performance was composed by the members of TASK (To Always Serve Krishna) of SJMKL. Thereafter, a skit entitled “How I came into Krishna Consciousness” which depicts the life story of HHJPS was presented by the VOICE’s (Vedic Oasis for Inspiration, Culture and Education) theatrical wing, Vraja Arts. The skit was based on a lecture by Srila Gurudev at the ISKCON Chowpatty temple.

This was followed by 60 lighted ghee lamps offering were presented by disciples and guest to Guru Maharaj with the accompaniment of melodious kirtan. The evening program was culminated with a cake cutting ceremony by all the senior disciples of Gurumaharaj. The night’s vyasa puja celebration attracted about 200 congregations and ended on a high note with more sumptuous prasad served.

A memorable day of fasting, feasting and honoring our beloved HHJPS Srila Gurudev, saw the whole ISKCON family, disciples of other Guru’s included coming together to honor a true fighter in the army of Srila Prabhupad for the success of the mission of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Guru Maharaj is indeed a victory flag in ISKCON and we thank all the devotees who arranged, contributed and assisted in making this Vyasa Puja festival a success. Hare Krsna.

Magical Mayapur

Posted by iskconklnews on April 6, 2009

This article appreared in a Malaysian Daily following the URI Gathering in January.

By DR AMIR FARID ISAHAK

A gathering in India of different religions and different people offers hope for the unity of religions.

I RECENTLY spent nearly two weeks as a vegan, interfaith explorer and peace-pilgrim at the world headquarters of ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness, more popularly known as the Hare Krishna movement) at Sri Mayapur, West Bengal, India.
I was there with about 300 members and youths of URI (United Religions Initiative, www.uri.org) for our triennial global assembly, hosted by ISKCON and the Bhaktivedanta Institute of Manipur.

Mayapur is about 100km north of Kolkatta, but the journey by 4WD took three hours because the road was full of potholes and the trip was more like an obstacle race, zigzagging to avoid craters, rickshaws, bicycles, cars and cows. Then there were the oncoming buses and over-laden lorries threatening to smash us head-on as the vehicles on both sides took turns transgressing into the wrong side. I was praying frantically through much of the journey, which was appropriate as I was going there as a “pilgrim” of peace!

Mayapur is the spiritual centre of Hare Krishna devotees. It is located just beside the sacred Gangga (Ganges) river in the agricultural heartland away from the hustle and bustle of Kolkatta.

Interfaith prayer at Mayapur.

The temple complex is walled like a castle, and on the outskirts are numerous stalls, shops, eateries and hotels catering to the pilgrims and tourists alike. Inside is a small town with several temples, halls, restaurants, hostels, apartments and meeting venues. There is a bank, communications and Internet station, travel agency and other services that the thousands living inside and outside may require.

There are also schools and several sacred places in the surrounding area. Transport to the neighbouring towns or places of interest is easily available, and one can even cross the Gangga on a boat or ferry across to the small town of Navadip.
Although it was approaching winter then, global warming showed its impact this year, as it was unusually warm, being cool only at night. I had gone there expecting the worst, bringing winter gear to protect me from the biting cold, but it turned out that even a T-shirt was sufficient.

And although the place was well maintained in terms of cleanliness and food preparation compared to what you may expect of India, the water supply was still suspect. The dry, dusty conditions made it worse. No matter how much precaution we all took, many still ended-up with diarrhoea or fever. Some got really sick.

Apart from us, there were hundreds of their devotees from all over the world who were there on their own pilgrimage, while many also came as volunteers for our global assembly. Just like us, they came from all the continents. I was fortunate to have been dinner guests of a Hare Krishna devotee couple from Moldova and Ukraine. There were also many African devotees who were very active in the dancing and singing.

Just outside the gates there is a well-planned housing estate where most of the Western devotees stay. Many are permanent residents with their children attending nearby schools, while others divide their time between their homelands and this spiritual home.

There was always activity in Mayapur. The singing and dancing in the main temple started at 4.30am. Since my room was just nearby, it served as my wake-up call, since my own prayer time was about that time too. Their devotional chanting, singing and dancing would go on at scheduled times throughout the day, often ending past midnight.

Every Saturday night, there was a festival with a parade headed by a decorated elephant, followed by a chariot carrying the deities, and devotees chanting and dancing down the streets within the compound. Thousands of devotees and tourists would throng Mayapur during each festival, more so if there were special events or celebrations.

Even though men and women freely mixed, there were strict rules against touching, holding hands, hugging or kissing in public. In fact, at the entrance, there was a sign which says “No playing; no games; no mundane music”. Before we went there, we were already warned about the no-hugging, no-meat, no-smoking and no-caffeine rules, but they actually allowed caffeinated-coffee for the URI group. That was the only compromise.
The vegetarian food was always delicious. I had never seen more varieties of fruit and veggie dishes, and enjoyed all of them. Many of us became sluggish in the first few days because we ate too much, trying to savour every dish that was new to us.

It was only after cutting down the portions and avoiding the sugary desserts that I felt energetic again, and managed to lose the weight gained previously. Our food was lovingly cooked and served by volunteers from all over the world, so the spread was also international.

After almost two weeks of being a strict vegan (the food also excluded onions, garlic or leek as these can arouse the libido and hamper the spiritual quest), I hope it will help me drastically cut down on my meat intake for the rest of my life. I have been espousing a low-meat diet and must practise what I preach.

The URI plenary sessions were held at a temporary structure erected at the site of the future Sri Mayapur Vedic Temple, which will be the largest Hindu temple in the world. When it is completed, it will bring many thousands more to Mayapur. It will dwarf the current icon, the Samadhi Temple, dedicated to the movement’s founder, His Divine Grace A C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.

Unity of religions
URI, which was established in 2000, is the fastest growing global interfaith movement. It is grassroots-based, being composed of over 400 interfaith groups (called “Cooperation Circles” or CC) spread all over the world.

Each group is made up of people of diverse religions, faiths or spiritual traditions doing any activity that promotes enduring interfaith cooperation and helps end religiously-motivated violence. Activities may include interfaith dialogues, sports, mountain-climbing, dance, music, art or anything you can think of. Together, over one million people are directly or indirectly involved in our activities.

So you can imagine how fun and activity-filled it was when 300 of us gathered for the Global Assembly at Mayapur. Our theme was “Pilgrims of Peace – Many Paths, One Purpose”. There were songs, dances and story-telling from the Sufis, Native Americans, indigenous South Americans and others, interspersed with prayers, plays and performances from every region of the world.

Our hosts further enriched our experience with their continuous chanting, dancing, processions and prayers.

Of course there were the serious meetings too, but we always had sing-and-dance interludes whenever the meetings got too long or too boring.

And probably for the first time, the Jewish Sabbath, Christian Mass, and Muslim azan (the call to prayer) and Friday Prayer were held in Mayapur. The prayers of all the other religions were also heard as our programme was full of such prayer occasions. We have proven that the people of all faiths can unite for peace, and have fun together, while keeping true to their respective beliefs.

ISKCON Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, hosted the CDM 4 day strategic planning meet between 19th and 22nd of March, 2009. The team discussed apart from the regular business the short and long term goals of the Ministry.

Apart from the existing vision team comprising of HG Kaunteya das (Italy), HG Seva Svarupa das (Argentina), HG Sarva Shakti dd (Ecuador) and Amrta Gaurangi dd (Croatia), few more dedicated devotees joined the ranks of the Ministry.

HG Caitanya Avatari das from Bangalore, an experienced Bhakti Vrksa preacher and a devotee with a deep caring attitude towards the community; HG Visnu Caitanya das, a congregational leader from Kuala Lumpur, who expanded the Damodara preaching program (a new out-reach tool used during Damodara month to introduce the general public to the benefits of this auspicious month as well as attract them to the practice of Krishna consciousness) and HG Uttama Caitanya das, Kuala Lumpur temple president, spiritual counselor and an avid strategist of congregational development in Malaysia.

One of most important topics discussed during the meetings, was to develop a plan on how to provide support and take care of devotees in different parts of the world where there are vaishnava communities. A number of new projects have been lined-up for this year, like developing Sraddha Kutir Program, publishing new books on community development, training and broadcasting.

Congregational Development Ministry hopes to serve the worldwide community of ISKCON devotees through consultancy, education and networking in the aspects of community development.

We would also like to invite interested devotees to come forward and get involved in many exciting projects under the banner of the Congregational Development Ministry, ISKCON.
