Chinese New Year Eve Palanquin
25 January 2009, Taman Kami D,

Taiping- ISKCON Taiping Yatra organized a Chinese New Year Eve Palanquin in Taman Kami D, Taiping, Perak and this event was coordinated by HG Yaduraj Krsna dasa, the president of Taiping Yatra. About 35 devotees attended the procession. The event was organized to provide an opportunity for the local community to benefit from the countless mercy of Their Lordships, Sacisuta Nitaichand.
The event started off with arati accompanied by bhajan recited by the devotees in one of the houses. The procession then commenced at around 10.45am in a light drizzle that did not dampen the spirits. The prasadam team was positioned right behind the procession to distribute prasadam to households. We only managed to visit a few houses as heavy rain soon drenched us all to the skin.
Everyone then took shelter in one of the homes. Despite being drenched to the skin, the congregation did not let up on the ecstatic kirtan and it went on for more than half an hour, in time when the heavy rain slowed to a drizzle. The procession then continued throughout the residential area of Taman Kami D. We returned to Taiping Bhaktivedanta Ashram at around 1.30pm, where sumptuous prasadam awaited the devotees.
In all, about 200 households were fortunate to receive dharsan of Their Lordships Sacisuta Nitaichand and about 500 packets of prasadam were distributed. We fervently believe that this event has changed forever the perception of the local communities towards ISKCON devotees as their warm welcome, friendly smiles and body language in paying homage to their Lordships were an experience worth repeating many times over.
We would like to thank the organizers; residents of Taman Kami D and
everyone else who helped us bring their Lordships to homes and for
contributing to the success of this event.

The Maha Harinam at Thaipusam
Batu Caves, Kuala Lumpur

8 February 2009, Batu Caves, Kuala Lumpur- The Maha Harinam for Thaipusam started at approximately 9.00am with almost 50 enthusiastic devotees at the ISKCON booth; located near to the Hanuman temple. The devotees included the VOICE students, Harinam Council members, SJMKL congregation devotees as well as Bengoli devotees. The maha harinam kicked off with His Grace Vishnu Caitanya prabhu leading the kirtan team from the ISKCON booth towards the Batu Caves Balaji temple.

The moment the kirtan started, all eyes were on the devotees as passers by and others looked curiously. The kirtan party proceeded to the entrance of the temple and started performing ecstatic kirtan for about 20 minutes. Every one in the temple from children to teenagers and adults looked with curiosity while others were simply enjoying the kirtan. The atmosphere was made even more beautiful as the pictures that adorned the temple walls were actually pictures from ISKCON, depicting the many past-times of Sri Krsna as articulated in the Bhagavad Gita.

The kirtan party then moved on to the Hanuman temple for about 15 minutes before proceeding towards the main road. The invitation cards, which encompass the Maha Mantra and the location map to Sri Jaganath Mandir Kuala Lumpur, were distributed to interested individuals.

His Grace Srivas Caitanya prabhu then took over the helm from His Grace Vishnu Caitanya prabhu to lead the kirtan along the main road, adjacent to the entrance of the Batu Caves temple. The nectar of the holy names was freely flowing to every fortunate soul present as the kirtan party maneuvered skillfully among the crowds.

Despite the scorching heat, the devotees continued enthusiastically while negotiating the crowds back from the main entrance of the Batu Caves towards the ISKCON booth. At this juncture, His Grace Ramananda Gaura prabhu led the euphoric kirtan. The kirtan party reached the ISKCON booth after an hour of blissful kirtan in the Batu Caves. Every devotee who was in the kirtan party was delighted at the opportunity and overjoyed at the experience of distributing the nectar of the holy name to many fortunate souls.

The Harinam Council members and VOICE then continued the kirtan for another hour at the Batu Caves Balaji temple, savoring every blissful
moment while spreading the mercy of the holy names to countless bystanders and anyone else who were fortunate enough to be there to hear the holy name.

Another wonderful day in the unlimited blissful nectar of harinam sankirtan.

Harinam sankirtan ki Jai !

CDM Convention in Taiping

By Srivas Caitanya dasa
On behalf of CDM Vision
Sri Jagannatha Mandir Kuala Lumpur

Hare Krsna

All glories to Srila Gurudeva
All glories to Srila Prabhupada
All glories to Sri Sri Nitai and Nimai
All glories to Sri Sri Jagannatha Baladeva and Subhadra Maiya

Dear All,
Please accept our humble obeisances

3rd Congregational Development Convention ? Taiping, Perak.

The congregational Development Ministry Vision team based in Kuala Lumpur, working in tandem with ISKCON Congregational Development Ministry in Mayapur, organized the 3rd Congregational Development Convention for Malaysian leaders in Taiping, Perak from the 9th ~ 11th January 2009.

The objective of the convention was to share, strategize and formulate ideas and plans for the systematic organization of congregational
development in each Yatra to further spur the growth of congregational development in Malaysia as a whole.

Hg Uttama Caitanya pr., HG Vishnu Caitanya pr., HG Srivas Caitanya Prabhu and HG Rasika Murari Prabhu from Sri Jagannatha Mandir Kuala Lumpur shared their experiences over the two days workshop. The main topics covered were on self development, sustenance and congregation devotee care and some basic concepts of Bhakti Homes. The emphasis was on the combined factor of form and substance, which alone could sustain the quality of growth and the continuity of our congregation in this millennium.

The summarized report was as follow.

Saturday (17/1/09)
6.00 am

The Bhagavatam class was conducted by HG Gaura Mandala Prabhu, after mangala arati and the japa session. HG said that he was pleased with the convention and mentioned that such efforts are indeed praise worthy and constituted important facets of the movement. As such, HG encouraged active participation from everyone concerned. HG also mentioned that he was looking forward to fresh CDM ties with Indonesia.

9.00am
Participants were served with sumptuous prasadam.

10.30am
The opening address was given by HG Uttama Caitanya Prabhu. HG opined that the convention was not to be treated as a formal seminar, instead he wished for it to be a sharing session for the benefit of all devotees and to pave the way forward for ISKCON Malaysia as a whole.

The day commenced with a session conducted by HG Rasika Murari Prabhu, entitled ?Diagnosis – Let?s not assume?. HG showed selected Srila Prabhupada?s letter (1968 ~ 1977) to his disciples emphasizing the importance of daily sadhana and studying his books. HDG emphasized that if these programs were not religiously followed, then every aspect Krsna consciousness will become a burden. HG also reminded the importance of daily sadhana. This was more so for preachers because the correct action and decisions now will have deeper impact on the lives of many souls that will soon embrace Mahaprabhu?s movement. As an example he quoted, ?If one were to plant a tree now, the generation to come can benefit from it for the next 400 years and similarly if we are serious in practice and preach this Sankirtana movement, then its benefits are more likely to extend for 10,000 years into the future.?

Thereafter, the session continued with a self analysis examination. In this session, the participants were examined with basic practical Krsna
consciousness questionnaires. This exercise was meant to assist the
participants to appraise their understanding and involvement in Krishna consciousness. It was a 40 minutes session which saw most of the participants completing on time.

HG Krishnacandra das Prabhu (VP2 of SJMKL) reminded everyone that HH Prabhavisnu Maharaj had once said that the cooperation among devotees was an all important quality and cautioned that if we failed in this aspect, then we are heading towards breaking everything that has been achieved thus far and we will soon become like any other society.

11.50am
The second session for the day was undertaken by HG Uttama Caitanya Prabhu titled ?Developing taste – let?s not miss the point?. HG took participants down memory lane via a story entitled, ?What happened on the way to Krsna?. HG pointed out that ISKCON had undergone much hardship and turbulent moments immediately after the founder acarya of the movement; HDG A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada had left his body. Many leaders and devotees alike were reported to have neglected the most vital issue; the development of Krsna prema, the prime reason for the formation of the society.

Many leaders are in agreement that most of the yatras appear to have no growth, lack spiritual zeal and enthusiasm, and that more importance is given to form than substance. HG highlighted the need for substance, Krsna consciousness, which is chanting and hearing; our basic essential sadhana.
He advocated that we develop genuine loving and caring relationships
between devotees. This HG said this will in turn nurture the devotees to further develop pure Krsna consciousness. HG also advised that yatras and temples must not be project based but should instead be devotee based; therein lay the real treasure and thus create a conducive environment for chanting and hearing for the further development of devotees in the yatra.

HG also implored that everyone should dwell in Caitanya Caritamrta on a daily basis as this would help to develop the intense love for fellow
devotees, just as Mahaprabhu did for His devotees.

1.30pm – 5.30pm
The participants were served sumptuous prasadam in the Lake Gardens by the Taiping devotees and outdoor activities were next on the agenda. Only a few games were possible as it started to rain, a common occurrence in this part of Malaysia.

7.00pm
After evening arati, HG Rasika Murari Prabhu shared the examination
results, which clearly highlighted weaknesses in self-development and its sustenance. The positive effect of the open exchange was that while it was unanimously agreed that more could be done to develop self improvement, everyone agreed that the best way forward was for a five day retreat and seminar to be conducted annually. This was considered an ideal way to learn the basic skills and substance of Krsna consciousness as a congregation. An important learning and conclusion was the general consensus that yatra leaders are genuinely needed to continue to lead the yatra and guide the devotees who are under their care.

18/1/2009
Session 3 was addressed by HG Uttama Prabhu. HG mentioned that currently, the biggest neglect in ISKCON was the lack of proper japa or chanting mood. Activities such as preaching and festivals cannot function without chanting but chanting he said was an activity that could stand alone. HG advised that everyone must sit and chant for a minimum of at least 30 minutes a day. The foundation is all about chanting and hearing. HG recapped on the previous day?s questionnaire session and shared his vision for the future, wherein HG hoped for and encouraged the leaders to train themselves correctly first before imparting their divine knowledge to others.

The next session was the CDM operational meeting. HG Rasika Murari Prabhu presented the importance of congregational preaching scores that was undertaken by CDM Mayapur. HG also emphasized that the CDM secretariat, SJMKL is ever willing and ready to help any yatra to complete their preaching scores.

HG Srivas Caitanya Prabhu presented his strategy for the continuous
cultivation of homes that were visited during Damodara programs. HG shared his experience where these ?interested? homes were visited regularly by the preachers to cultivate the family members of these homes. HG called this program the ?Damodara Home Cultivation Program?. HG also advised that CDM SJMKL had established its own secretariat to carry out its preaching operations and activities. All the participants unanimously agreed to make the effort to meet again for the next CDM meeting, scheduled for June in Klang.

12.30pm
Adjourned

Our special note of appreciation goes out to Taiping Yatra, especially HG Yaduraj Prabhu and his dedicated and committed team for managing an exemplary organization for the event. The appropriateness of the conference venue, comfortable accommodation, the luncheon at Taiping Lake Garden, the ample and delicious Prasadam made this event a most memorable one.

There were numerous outcomes that were both delightful and enlightening, discovered over the two days Vaishnava Sanga. The most prominent aspect was the growth in the participation and the seriousness with which participants excelled themselves and helped others along the way deserves mention. The immense bliss, joy and experience gained in the midst of like-minded Vaishnavas association were priceless. This was definitely a small step forward towards a progressive and vibrant congregational development for the betterment in the near future, in Malaysia specifically and South East Asia generally. A vision inspired by our beloved Gurumaharaj HH Jayapataka Swami, a stalwart and doyen in the field of Congregation Development.

ISKCON Thaipusam 2009

Posted by iskconklnews on February 25, 2009

thaipusam

By Ravi Lochan Das

This year Thaipusam fell on a Sunday, (8th Feb), which provided for a three-day festival from 7th Feb till 9th Feb. because of the long weekend holidays. As expected, the crowd was very much greater than last year. We set up our booth, (which was 20′ by 20′), on the 4th and started distribution on the 5th. until we finally dismantled on the 15th. Throughout these 11 days we manned the booth as we had a constant flow of bargain shoppers coming by.

Many devotees who had volunteered to serve at this festival turned up to help at the booth and they were duly rewarded by experiencing the transcendental bliss in distributing Srila Prabhupada’s books. Others did their bit by providing Prasadam for the devotees or helped to set up and dismantle the booth. There was even a samkirtan party of more than 30 devotees who freely distributed the Holy Names through Kirtans amongst the hordes of people on Thaipusam day.

What was most gloriously significant was the fact that unlike the early days of book distribution in Malaysia, (in the eighties and nineties), now the people are quite aware of spiritual literature and come searching for the Hare Krsna booth to get some of Srila Prabhupada’s books. Very excitedly they blurt out that they have read His Divine Grace’s books and now want to read more of the same. Others come to the booth just to show their friends the books they had previously bought and read. Its instances like this that one constantly gets to be reminded about Srila Prabhupada’s magnanimity.

Although we were able to reach our targets for this festival, we were unfortunate that our consignment of books and paraphernalia did not arrive in time and we had to make do with whatever we had in stock. Overall the whole mission was greatly successful in that there was ample opportunity for preaching, the result of which can already be seen at the SJMKL Sunday feast being attended by some who came up to the booth. Another thing that puts a smile on our faces is the fact the SJMKL devotees are now getting more enthusiastic to distribute SP’s books. As such they are looking forward to the next festival where they will have more opportunities.

Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Sarswati App Festival

Posted by iskconklnews on February 18, 2009

bhaktisiddhanta1

By Bhakta Gautam

Hare Krishna dear devotees of Lord Jagannatha, Baladev and Subhadra,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

Today we celebrated the most auspicious appearance day of Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Maharaj and the disappearance day of HH Gour Govinda Maharaj in Jagannatha Mandir. As it was a Saturday, not all congregation members assembled as many were working. Still, other enthusiastic devotees gathered to participate in glorifying these two great Vaishnava saints. The temple was beautifully decorated with flowers and a special vyasa asana was set up besides the one of our dear Srila Prabhupada.

The program for today started with the regular darshan of the deities in the morning at 7.30 am. Then there was an audio lecture by Srila Prabhupada where he is glorifying his spiritual master. This lecture showed how much love Srila Prabhupada had for his spiritual master and how he took all the instructions of his spiritual master as his heart and soul and executed these to the best of his ability. After this, our temple president HG Uttama Caitanya Prabhu started singing Vaishnava bhajans glorifying all the Vaishnava saints in our parampara. Prabhu then read the translation for us to go deep in the mood of real glorification as exhibited by Vaishnava song writers like Bhakti Vinode Thakur, Narottam Das Thakur, Vrindavan Chandra and others.

Next, his HG Uttama Prabhu narrated various pastimes of Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Thakur which was pure nectar to hear even though they are repeated every year. Prabhu pointed out that all the gurus in our parampara are representatives of Nityananda Prabhu and are all part of guru tattva. Prabhu also explained that for a surrendered disciple, the guru promises that he will come personally to deliver. That means that the guru tattva representive of Lord Nityananda will come, and not the guru in the same form. Prabhu also highlighted how Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati was a revolutionary in giving Brahman diksha on the basis of quality, rather than birth. This really agitated the Brahmana caste, which felt that their high position in society was being threatened and who therefore plotted to kill Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati by various means. However, they were unsuccessful by the will of the Lord. Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati also revolutionized how each and every thing should be used in the service of Krishna by driving to Radha Kund in a car. At that time, using cars was not the habit of sannyasis. Likewise, Srila Prabhupada was also a revolutionary for he made non-Indians, who are considered of lower birth than animals according to the Vedas, Brahmans. Prabhupada was heavily criticized for this by his godbrothers, but he answered back by saying that he was just following the instructions of his Guru Maharaja.

Prabhu then glorified HH Gour Govinda Maharaj, who was born in a Vaishnava family and had read Srimad Bhagavatam , Bhagavad Gita and Caitanya Caritamrita by the age of 8. Prabhu explained that the family in which Maharaj was born was the family kirtaneers of the Jagannatha temple in Puri and was given this status by the king himself. At the age of 45, Maharaj left his home and took Vanaprastha. He went all over north India looking for a spiritual master and finally reached Vrindavan. Maharaj was sure to find a spiritual master in the holy birth land of Krishna. He was given a Back to Godhead magazine by an ISKCON devotee on the streets and found in the magazine answers to his questions on Lord Gouranga and Lord Gopal. He then decided to meet Srila Prabhupada and came to his residential quarters. Seeing his torn clothes and mendicant-like condition, Srila Prabhupada’s disciples thought Maharaj was a beggar and did not allow him to meet Srila Prabhupada.

But Maharaj got an opportunity to meet Srila Prabhupada when no one was around. Indeed, he quickly went upstairs to see his spiritual master. The first question Srila Prabhupada asked when HH Gour Govinda Mahraj entered his room was “Have you taken Sannyasa?” Srila Prabhupada told him he will give him Sannyasa. Srila Prabhupada gave Sannyasa initiation to Maharaj on the grand occasion of the temple opening ceremony of Sri Sri Krishna Balaram Mandir in Vrindavan. Srila Prabhupada asked Maharaj to translate his books in Oriya and Bengali and also to build a temple in Orrisa. Maharaj took these instructions as his heart and soul and worked though the rest of his life fulfilling the instructions of his spiritual master. Not a single day would pass when Maharaja would not do the translation requested and even though he had a busy schedule, he would not take prasadam before finishing his translation quota for the day. Maharaj also dedicated his life for the building Sri Sri Krishna Balaram Mandir in Bhuvaneshwar. This temple is now visited by thousands of people every year.

Maharaj left his body in Mayapur while he was in a very auspicious mood. Indeed, he was narrating the pastimes of Lord Jagannatha and remembering his childhood village deity Gopal jee on this day. Uttama Prabhu also pointed that in Mayapur every year they have a three day festival in remembrance and glorification of HH Gour Govinda Maharaj at this time of the year. HH Gour Govinda Maharaj’s brother, who is part of the kirtan party in Sri Jagannatha temple in Puri, assembles together with other leaders and well-wishers of Maharaj to remember him.

This was a very inspiring glorification lecture given by HG Uttama Prabhu. It went on till about 2.00 pm. It brought the realization of how fortunate we are to be in the same parampara with great saints such as Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati, Srila Prabhupada, Srila Gour Govinda Maharaj. After the glorification, we had Raj Bhoga Aarti and Guru Puja. This was nectar after such a wonderful description of the pastimes of the dear devotees of the Lord. We concluded the program by honoring prasadam, which was simply wonderful, as is always the case. It was full of the taste of the total dedication put in by the management and congregation of devotees.

All glories to Sri Guru and Gouranga !!!! All glories to all the Vaishnavas!

Nityananda Triyodasi

nityanandaram

By Bhakta Gautam

om ajnana timirandhasya jnananjana salakaya
caksur unmilitan yena tasmai sri guruve namah

Hare Krishna to all the dear devotees of the Lord,

Please accept my most humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

On Sunday the 8th of February, we celebrated the most auspicious day of Lord Nityananda’s appearance in our SJKML temple. This year, the festival coincided with the Thaipoosam festival, so the Harinam Ministry organized a very special Harinam in Batu caves for the pleasure of Nityananda Prabhu. This Harinam takes place annually, but it was special this time as Harinam is most pleasing to Nityananda Prabhu. So, a lot of devotees missed the program in the temple to participate in Harinam and book distribution for the pleasure of Their Lordships Nityananda and Gaurachandra.

We started this auspicious day with the Mangal Aarti program, which was very blissful, as usual. After Mangal Aarti, we chanted japa until 7:30 am, when we had Darshan Aarti. This was most beautiful with Their Lordships Sri Jaganath, Baladeva and Subhadra and Sri Sri Nitai Gaurasundar looking gorgeous in Their new outfits, donated by Satte Mataji. At this point, some devotees left for the Batu caves to join the Harinam party and to distribute the holy names of the Lord to each and everyone.

Harinam at Batu caves was ecstatic as always and was very well organized by the Harinam Ministry of SJKML. About 50 devotees enthusiastically participated in this enlivening experience. The book distribution party also set up a stall for the whole duration of the program and very enthusiastically distributed books for the pleasure of Lord Nityannda and Srila Prabhupada to spread the Vedic knowledge far and wide. The Harinam lasted for an hour and was very well received by onlookers who clapped and danced along to the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra.

While some devotees were participating in the glorious Harinam, others enthusiastically participated in the proceeding in the temple. In the temple, a video lecture of Srila Prabhupada was played from 8:45 am till 10:30 am. All the devotees listened to this inspiring and enriching video very attentively and was enriching. After the lecture, the Abhishek ceremony started with beautiful bhajans sung by devotees. Everyone was given an opportunity to personally perform Abhishek for Nityananda Rama until noon.

At this point, we had a discourse in English and Tamil on the pastimes of Lord Nityananda. The English class was given by HG Tyaga Caitanya Prabhu and the Tamil one by HG Vishnu Caitanya Prabhu. HG Tyaga Caitanya Prabhu stressed on the point that Lord Nityananda is the personification of Guru Tattva and that His mercy is required to reach Lord Gouranga. Lord Gouranga will then bring us to the service of Srimati Radharani, which will in turn ultimately lead to Sri Krishna. Prabhu also highlighted through many vivid stories how Lord Caitanya himself considered Lord Nityananda superior to him and considered it a great offense if someone put Him before Lord Nityananda.

At 1:15 pm, we had Raj Bhog Aarti, accompanied by a lively kirtan in which all the devotees loudly chanted and danced for their purification. This was a wonderful scene and the temple was vibrating with the sound of devotees chanting loudly. Their Lordships were offered over 300 dish varieties, expertly arranged by the devotees. The kirtan went on for over an hour and was concluded with a feast for all the assembled.

Srila Prabhupada ki Jaya!!!
Lord Nityananda Rama ki Jaya!!
